Anglo-Zionist entente. It cooperated with British forces and the Irgun Zvai Leumi in attacks against Arabs. Although the Palestinian guerrillas suffered heavy losses in the Lebanese civil war, they continued to mount attacks against Israel in the late 1970s. A boycott of Zionist and British goods was proclaimed.
On November 13 the assembly heard Arafat plead for the Palestinian peoples national rights. Poverty and social misery became characteristic of life in the region. The prophet Jeremiah, who had foreseen the tragic denouement and had repeatedly warned his people against their suicidal policy, died in Egypt. After Abbsid authority was briefly restored, Palestine came under Ikhshdid rule (935969). They remained unassimilated and were generating a new sense of identity based on a pan-Arabism inspired by Nasser, the cultivated memory of a lost paradise (Palestine and an emerging pan-Islamic movement. The plan was a withdrawal in phases and a simultaneous transfer of responsibilities to the Palestinian authorities for maintaining security.
